The Visconti Devils by Ria Dimitra

A Match Made In Heaven: Maggie Pacelli didn’t believe in love at first sight. She was about to lose all belief in true love. But that all changed when she met Michael LeClaire, the new curator at the Beinecke Library at Yale. Michael is fascinated with the new tarot deck that Maggie is painting–and he also seems to be fascinated with Maggie. Maggie can’t believe how perfect he is for her–or how hard she’s falling for him.

A Date With Hell: When Michael shows Maggie the rare 15th century Visconti tarot cards in the Beinecke’s archives and reveals to her that The Devil is missing from every one of the surviving decks, Maggie is intrigued. The Devil is the one card she can’t decide how to paint. Maggie feels certain that the answer to the riddle lies in Milan.

Unable to dissuade her, Michael accompanies Maggie to Italy on her quest to discover the truth about the missing Visconti Devils. Their search takes them to the Brera, where they meet Luca Arcangeli, a wealthy art collector who may hold the key.

But in Milan at the height of Carnevale, nothing and no one are what they seem–and Maggie will soon find herself at the center of a struggle between the forces of light and darkness that will challenge her beliefs and force her to choose the fate of her soul.

The Blood Waltz by Ria Dimitra

“We share the same blood . . . and the same evil desires.”

Selena D’Agostino needed a vacation. So when she received a mysterious invitation from England to meet long-lost relations at their family castle, it seemed just the ticket.

Fiend Angelical by Ria Dimitra

Marco Visconti longed to become a powerful sorcerer, able to command the elements and wield incredible power. At the tender age of 15, he ran away from home and started down a dark, dangerous path to a life of crime and infamy. But one fateful night, running for his life, he got much more than he had bargained for…

Kassie Antonescu thought her dream had come try when she met Marco, the sexy, charismatic lead singer of a new local rock band. She was ready to be swept off her feet by a man who was everything her mother had warned her about…except that her mother hadn’t told her about vampires…

When a girl is this madly in love, she tends to overlook the little things…like the fact that he only sees her at night…he never eats…he casts no reflection in a mirror…and those wolf howls he does sound awfully convincing…

Everyone knows vampires aren’t real – or are they?

The Mystery Alliance: Prequel to Evian’s Saga
(The Mystery Alliance: Evian’s Saga) by Taffey Champion

Before the captivating Evian Magi enters the picture and becomes a key member of The Mystery Alliance, Myth Vaga was a critical ally within their intriguing fold. He once lived amongst The Mystery Alliance in London, England. Yet, a serendipitous meeting and an ensuing romantic involvement with a bewitching beauty becomes the instrumental catalyst for his not surprising, but climactic betrayal.

Cold Coffee Book Review: I enjoyed reading The Mystery Alliance: Evian’s Saga by Taffey Tawanna Champion first, so I found this prequel extremely interesting.

The Mystery Alliance is an elite rescue unit. The individuals in this unit are called Mystics. Their secret alliance rescues hostages that are held in extreme terrorists’ situation where other rescue attempts have failed or were impossible.

It all begins at a manor named “Dwellen” located in London, England. It is here where training in “Mystery Arts” begins and missions are born.

Get to know the “Mystics” who make up this anti-terrorist group and follow up this short prequel with The Mystery Alliance: Evian’s Saga.

I, Theodocia McLean, endorse The Mystery Alliance: Prequel to Evian’s Saga by Taffey Tawanna Champion. It will be interesting to see where the author goes with this series. I purchased this book from Kindle. This review was completed on February 17, 2018.

The Mystery Alliance: Evian’s Saga
by Taffey Tawanna Champion

An unsuspecting young man meets a mysterious beauty through a bizarre encounter in Paris, France. After speaking with her, he agrees to live among a secret society of persons called Mystics. Here, he learns about their secret alliance and their mastery of a spectacular self-defense technique: The Mystery Arts. Soon, Evian discovers that there is no turning back from the path he has chosen.

Excerpt: “We are members of an elite rescue unit…The Mystery Alliance. All of the members of this rescue unit are called Mystics. Mystics have haunting, surreal beauty: almost as though we were chosen to be Mystics from the womb. We also have unique abilities and skills which set us apart from others. Yet, only prominent, high-ranking government officials have knowledge of our existence. We are the persons these officials contact when no one else can rescue hostages in extreme terrorist situations. And this is our story…”

Cold Coffee Book Review: The Mystery Alliance: Evian’s Saga is a short reading experience, originally written as a screen play and converted to an e-book.

Packed with a diverse cast of characters, easy to follow dialog and sixteen chapters with sub-headings which act like separate scenes or skits in a play with different places, times, events and characters.

The main character is Evian Magi who works as a Jack-of-all-trades for the Machiavellia’s Traveling Carnival. Paris, France is full of history, mystery and intriguing people from all over the globe. It is the beauty of a woman that lures Evian into a secret society called The Mystery Alliance where he finds his path is forever sealed.

I quote a passage from chapter seven to give you a glimpse into Evian’s story.

“Delphi and Raven are in the gardens surrounding the chateau, picking flowers. Evian comes outside for a brief respite and notices the two of their bent forms. He is delighted to see that the ladies are engaged in such a pleasant past- time and decides to join their little gathering.

When he approaches them, he says, “There you are, ladies.”

Both women stand up and face their visitor. Delphi replies with, “Hello, Evian. Did you want something?

“Actually, I just came outside to unwind for a while. But, now that I think of it, there are some things that I have been meaning to ask you.”

“All right, then. Wait one moment, please.” “Sure.’

As Delphi returns to her task, Evian turns his attention to Raven. Smiling, he says, “Hello again, Raven.”

Raven glances at him. “Hello, there. You seem very cheerful today. May I ask the reason?”

Evian simply shrugs. “Of course…it’s just that I think I have found my purpose in this world.”

Raven smiles at hearing this. “You’ve made your decision, then.” “I have. So far, I’ve not yet discovered a reason to leave.”

“Have you already informed Machiavellia’s of your decision yet?”

Evian nods. “Yes, Raven Hawk, I have. They weren’t happy to lose me, but I suspect they’ll get over it; in time.”

“And how are you finding The Mystery Arts?”

Evian’s face positively glows as he thinks about his progress with the innovative martial arts form. “Fantastic! I’m absolutely fascinated by it all.”

“Oh no, tell me we don’t have another adrenaline junkie.

Evian frowns. “What do you mean by another? Who are you talking about?” Raven suddenly clams up and becomes evasive in answering his query.

“That’s a story for another time.”

I, Theodocia McLean, endorse The Mystery Alliance: Evian’s Saga as an introduction to the book series by Taffey Tawanna Champion. I reviewed this book from a Kindle format. The review was completed on September 13, 2016.

Cold Coffee Press Spotlight Interview With Author Taffey Tawanna Champion

Author Taffey Tawanna Champion is a small-town girl born and raised in Greensboro, GA, educated at GTCHS in Greensboro, GA and further educated at Elon College which eventually became Elon University. She excelled in writing as a young child; even earned merits and won awards for writing ability, including a “Passport to Excellence” plaque. Reading and writing also were Taffey’s first loves before drama and music, which of course, came after.

Before, during and after college, Taffey became a world traveler, even electing to live in London, England for one semester whilst studying at Elon University. She traveled several times to Paris, France at this time. Taffey also met and encountered celebrities in London, England which served to make her experiences even more special. Added to her world traveler status, she lived in South Korea for a short interval. This experience, including her fascination with various Kung-Fu techniques and martial arts films aided in her ability to create The Mystery Arts in The Mystery Alliance: Evian’s Saga.

She also worked in Marina, CA as an Americorps VISTA for MCHOME (a division of Interim, Inc.) under the Coalition of Homeless Services Providers. During this time, she became acquainted with the various artists of Breakthrough H’ART (a program synonymous with MCHOME) and also with noted Austrian Artist/Painter, Hans Kindel. It was here, under the tutelage of Hans Kindel and Bill Donnelly that she discovered her talent for Abstract/Impressionist Art. This is where the initial cover of her E-book originated, but there is a new Cover representing this E-Book currently.

“The Mystery Alliance: Evian’s Saga” was created initially as a copyrighted action/adventure screenplay, however, Taffey decided to adapt it into an E-book: the first in a series of E-books actually. “The Mystery Alliance: Evian’s Saga” is available for sale at Amazon, Smashwords, and will be distributed via Smashwords to many other retailers, as well. This E-book is also made available for Libraries to obtain.

Interview:

What makes you proud to be a writer from Greensboro, GA? I suppose that I’m proud to be a writer from Greensboro, GA because I am a southern belle from a small town, and I believe it is this fact that inspires others from rural areas of the USA, to be more determined to follow their dreams. I have even heard from some individuals saying something to this effect, since releasing my E- Book, “The Mystery Alliance: Evian’s Saga”.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? No one specifically inspired me to become a writer. I have always excelled in English and writing since I was a child. And because I have such an overactive imagination, I have always felt that I should give it my “best shot”, so to speak. However, Mr. Keanu Reeves, the Actor, inspired my passion for Action Adventure writing because I always loved his Action films tremendously while I was growing up. Mr. Reeves also inspired the creation of my protagonist, Evian Magi.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? I was a screenplay writer first, beginning in 1999, but my original copyrighted screenplay, “The Mystery Alliance: Evian’s Saga” was not optioned because I created such high-concept material. So, later on, I decided to adapt it into an E-Book. I would say that I began writing with the intention to be published in either 2007 or 2008.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? Yes, somewhat, because my family and I have always enjoyed watching Action and Martial Arts films, since I was very little.

Do you come up with your title before or after you write the manuscript? I always endeavor to come up with my title before I begin creating literary material, but sometimes the title is conceived after I have already started writing my literary works.

Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre? The genre in which I write is fiction. Its subgenres which I’ve been focusing on are Action Adventure and Fantasy. I do love a great drama, but I am highly fascinated and intrigued by Action Adventure and Fantasy films. I have also been an avid film enthusiast regarding Mr. Keanu Reeves’ films while I was growing up. Therefore, I suppose those are the reasons I prefer fiction writing; and most likely why my E-Book, “The Mystery Alliance: Evian’s Saga” is characterized as an Action Adventure/Futuristic Fantasy.

What was your inspiration, spark or light bulb moment that inspired you to write the book that you are seeking promotion for? I do realize that this will sound so cliché, but I experienced vivid dreams about beautifully mystical beings with almost supernatural powers in 1999 first. After I began writing what I remembered about these dreams on paper, I became spellbound and quite determined to write a Feature film screenplay to do justice to such fascinating visions.

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? My most rewarding experiences with my writing process, I must say, are having become Self-Published; also having quite a few wonderful offers to promote my material, and especially with having been blessed with meeting and working on a Blog Tag Tour project with the absolutely fantastic and noted Author, Schuyler J. Ebersol.

What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? I would have to say that it was when I became Self-Published via the use of the phenomenal Smashwords online E-Book website.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Well, I am but a humble small-town girl from Greensboro, GA, but the only advice I can give, is to make certain you do indeed have a passion and dedication toward becoming a Published Author.

Who is your favorite author and why? I have never really had a favorite Author, because I have been a lover of many books. However, presently, my favorite Author is none other than Schuyler J. Ebersol, because I certainly loved reading “The Hidden World”. The visual imagery in his book is positively astounding; not to mention, his expert writing ability.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us? Yes, I created my own genre (i.e., Action Adventure/Futuristic Fantasy) in honor of my Muse, actor Keanu Reeves’ pioneering work in action films; for my protagonist character, “Evian Magi”, is the Mystic Fantasy Hero version of Keanu Reeves. Initially, I had created “The Mystery Alliance: Evian’s Saga” as the first E-Book to launch my innovative series. I am now releasing “The Mystery Alliance: Prequel to Evian’s Saga” as the second E-Book in this captivating series

The imposing sheriff from Norton sends Snow to the Islands to investigate Jamie Jamieson, one of her friends and a man she dates casually, and once the first fury has passed, she’s eager to go. Mostly so that she can come back and shove Hawker’s suspicions down his throat.

Things are not what they seem on the Islands, though, and when Snow has been shot at, almost drowned and fallen through the roof of a cave, she starts thinking about her life, and her past.

Then she suddenly finds herself in a situation where she has a tough choice to make. Will she follow her heart or the pull from her family and friends? And will she ever find peace with her past?

About The Author: The proper way to put it here would probably be to describe how I love to play with our two big dogs, adore my fantastic daughters and how much I love to read.

Another way would be to use my imagination and then I would be a super powerful warrior woman, think Xena the warrior princess (though with less tacky clothes). Or when I think of it, maybe I’m actually more of a Hercule Poirot (sans the suit and moustache). Or maybe I’m like Aragorn, strong and cool and then I might get to meet Gandalf! Or I could be Bella’s pretty cousin and snap Jacob up in a second (yeah, I’m so not team Edward), or wait, maybe I could be like one of them heroines in historical novels who swoon all the time. I’ve always wanted to swoon…

Well, I guess you get how my mind is working (or not working, some say).

Anyways, I like to write. Stories, adventures, romantic and happy stuff mixed up with sorrow and hardship, and bit of laughter here and there because the way I see it – life is way too short to go around feeling grumpy.

Will keep you guessing.

I enjoyed this collection of short stories very much. I found that I was often put in mind of Rod

Serling’s great television show, “Twilight Zone.” The stories left me anxious to find out the conclusion, and trying to guess how it would end. I have my favorite stories. You will too.

About The Author: Many of you have known me as a business owner, Personal & Business Development Coach, Social Media Publicist and radio DJ over the past 45+ years. Although I’m going kicking and screaming into retirement, I guess I have to accept it. Not that I really want to mind you, but circumstances dictate that I do.

Back in 1992, I was living in Lake Tahoe with my family having left L.A. 2 years earlier and was doing some consulting at the time. I was laying in bed one night when I heard in the woods across from where we lived, the sound of coyotes howling. I thought it was so cool but more importantly, it seemed to open a floodgate of story ideas and so I sat down and over the next twelve months cranked out two novels and accompanying screenplays. I literally couldn’t stop the story lines from coming and I had to write down brief synopsis for all the future stories I would write. I didn’t do anything with them at the time as “Life” has a tendency to go on while we’re busy making other plans. Fortunately, I had already gotten some very credible validation for my works and it inspired me to say to myself, “I’ll get back to this soon”

Raising children, remodeling our new home, taking care of parents who we moved in with us, working in radio, moving to Las Vegas, opening a new business, selling that business, moving back up to the Tahoe area, starting yet two more businesses and working in radio again took me all the way to 2013 when we moved back to Las Vegas once again. I’ve finally gotten back to my writing. Wasn’t sure if it would “flow” like before but sure enough, it has and so, here we go again and I’m loving it!

The Perennial Migration by Dominik Marcel Kirtaime

The year is 3010, the human race divided; the new breed living inside the World Administration dome network and outside the older breed. A pandemic, broken out throughout the dome network by a corrosion in the citizens’ wrist chips, is causing the planet to die. Whether the outbreak was accidental or intentional, either way the reptilian race stood to gain from such an apocalypse.

With most metal resources now the property of the World Administration, survival of man, beast and plant will depend on such life forms working together; and the leniency of our galaxy controllers.

Creative dystopian world.

This is a very creative dystopian story where the people are separated by wealth, privilege and skill-sets into ‘the new breed’ –which gets all the perks and ‘the old breed’ — which gets tossed out into the savage wilderness. In this mix is a soldier, Leo, who finds himself cast out of the domed universe into the wild beyond.

His brother, Thorn, and sister, True, soon find themselves in conflict with this rather strict regime and have to flee their once seemingly perfect civilization.

Each of the citizens is tracked by an ‘intelligent chip’ implanted in the wrist until a strange sickness necessitates the removal of these devices. As the siblings fight for survival and to reunite with their brother, they begin to uncover a plot against the human race.

Oh and humans aren’t the only inhabitants in this particular cosmos, there are reptilian beings who want to have these citizens to dinner. Not as a social courtesy mind you, as the entree. In this highly detailed sphere, human organs are a delicacy.

Aided by the old breed and a group of ‘forest folk’ these siblings surmount major disadvantages to try and save Earth from potential genocide.

Told through multiple POV’s, including Leo’s, Thorn’s and True’s — which offers a glimpse into the siblings’ relationship. There are a few typos which could be fixed with another round of proofing. It did not stop me from following the story.

I would recommend this for ages 13 and up. The attack scenes and fights in the hospital dome might be too mature for younger readers.

There’s some clever world building here. And the author certainly ensures that there are plenty of twists to keep the reader guessing.

An Enjoyable Sci-Fi about humans, aliens, and survival!

The first I want to talk about is the book cover. While the book cover isn’t a deciding factor when it comes to enjoying stories, as far as I’m concerned, I do appreciate a good, eye-catching cover, and that’s what The Perennial Migration has. I really like the reptilian-esque eye. Coming to the story, it’s Sci-Fi and D.M. Kirtmaime does a good job establishing the premise in the prologue. The characters are interesting, which is important when it comes to telling stories. The story is 165 pages long so you can easily read it one sitting, and you’ll want to because of the pace it has, and you wanting to know if the migration was a success. I won’t mind reading a sequel either, which I think Kirtaime should write.

Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars. By Encuentro on April 26, 2017. Format: Kindle Edition

An Exhilarating Science Fiction Thriller!

D. M. Kirtaime has done a fabulous job of crafting a dystopian thriller and creating a futuristic setting in which one group of characters’ lives in a secluded world, ignorant to the horrors that await them just below the surface, while another group of characters seek to rule the planet and exploit humans for their own personal needs.

Siblings True, Leo and Thorn are faced with a threat that nothing in the seclusion of life in a dome community could possibly have prepared them for. Reptilians, hiding beneath the surface of the Earth, have risen to feed on human organs and take back what they believe to be rightfully theirs. To make matters worse for the story’s protagonists, the Reptilians are being assisted by humans within the World Administration Force.

The characters of True, Leo and Thorn are well-developed. Readers are given characters they can sympathize with and root for.

The villainous Reptilians are the perfect antagonists for the story’s heroes. The threat they pose seems insurmountable when their horrific plan is unveiled.

“The Perennial Migration” is a fast-paced thrill-ride with plenty of twists and turns! Highly-recommended!

Suspense, thriller, futuristic technology and war

The perennial Migration was a book full of suspense and thrills, but those aren’t necessarily my favorite things about this book. Some of the things I liked the most were the characters and even more so the new look at a futuristic, post-war planet full of crazy new technology and structures. You get to see that from the very beginning in the prologue when the author tells you a bit of the back ground; like what happened to the planet, the split in society, and the dome structures and tunnels. I liked being able to follow the characters throughout a story, even when struggles and obstacles appeared for them. It was almost as if I was there with them. The idea of having to move to another planet is daunting, making this book that much better. One of the best positives is the adventure in a foreign place, but with familiar human emotions and attributes.

Wonderful Sci-Fi

Sci-Fi isn’t a genre I read much, but once I got into this story, I was super excited to see where it would take me. There were so many twists and turns that by the end I couldn’t believe it was really over. I think I’ll definitely read more in the sci-fi genre after having this wonderful book open the door.

I particularly enjoyed reading about the forest folk and their ability to …

The Perennial Migration by Dominik Kirtaime is an interesting mixture of sci-fi and fantasy. Depicting the situation on Earth, hundreds of years from now, it is slightly reminiscent of Brave New World and Lord of the Rings. The book contains fascinating, albeit occasionally troubling, ideas which could be developed in subsequent series. I particularly enjoyed reading about the forest folk and their ability to communicate with nature. The plot is tight and easy to follow; the characters are well-formed – one could almost smell the reptilians. I hope that the author follows through with the promise he makes at the end of the book and continues the story in another volume.

Well worth the money

This is an excellent read with an engaging story and believable characters. Set in the future in the midst of a pandemic disaster, it draws on a lot of what’s going on around us today and is one of those stories that can be read on several different levels. I enjoyed this book immensely and look forward to more by Mr. Kirtaime.

The author has done a great job capturing the post global war events and how the life for humans become. The pain, their choice to migrate to another planet and the role of technology are well written. Overall the book “The Perennial Migration” written by the author D. M. Kirtaime is a great read.

Unexpected

‘The Perennial Migration’ by D.M. Kirtaime is a face-paced, mix of sci-fi and fantasy. You better be ready because this book will take you to the Earth’s future. I love the characters’ extreme complexity all throughout the story. The storyline, plot and ending were also unexpected and superb! There are a lot of things that I love about this book and I couldn’t list them all. But one thing is for sure, I love it! And I am sure you will too! I highly recommend it.

Message From The Author: I grew up the son of an Army officer and a loving, caring mother. Dad’s career offered me the chance to see and live all over this great country of ours and instilled in me a love for it and our way of life. I attended 10 schools in 12 years, and rode out the 8.7 earthquake in Alaska (1964.) I graduated with a degree in Economics from Auburn University.

I had the opportunity to wear the uniform myself and served as an artillery officer in Vietnam. I have an undying and unapologetic love for the U. S. military and often include them in my novels. It will come as no surprise that politically, I lean to the right. No apologies for that, either.

I started writing when I was able to grasp the big, fat pencil that our teachers used to give us and hold it up to my Big Chief tablet. I love a good story and enjoy telling them.

I write under the name A. A. MacQueen, borrowed from my great-uncles, Angus and Alexander MacQueen. Master storytellers, both.

I really enjoyed this story that takes the reader back in time, to past decades where racism was common and different nationalities kept more to themselves for self-preservation, comfort and religious freedoms.

The backdrop for this tale is Odessa, Texas during the 1970’s, an unsolved murder, and a young lawyer with a personal need to solve the crime.

The characters were who really brought this story to life; Covey and his business partners, JayJay his love interest, the police and the rest of the cast of colourful characters.

“JayJay, beautiful, smart, sexy as hell, and she was a kindred spirit.”

“Wine, Covey, candles on tables, soft lights, and long conversation. One I have been hopin’ for a few months now. You man enough to handle it?”

“This ole boy was gonna enjoy the ride but be damned careful.”

The author gives the reader some history of the Texas Oil boom and bust, college football highlights, gangs and prostitution. Real people and events to add to the feel of this small-town story. “Old times not forgotten.”

In this page-turner, DC lawyer Covey returns to live in his oil-rich hometown of Odessa TX and solve a murder of a mother-figure that haunted him from his teenage years. Fascinating interplay of race, football, crime, and love as Covey rediscovers his (and other) pasts while establishing a successful professional practice and, and to his surprise and delight, pursuing his private investigation with an old, but special friend, as well as other colleagues. Well-developed characters and descriptions give perspectives on West Texas life in the 1990s, with a focus on Odessa’s vibrant south side black community. Plot has unexpected twists and turns and a surprise ending. Expect to see the return of Covey Jencks in sequels.

As someone who was born in Odessa in the 50’s and still here, I think you portrayed Odessa exactly as I remember it growing up. I hope you do turn this into a series. The story may be fiction, but there is enough truth to it to make it convincingly real.

Summer of ’66 by Shelton L. Williams

In the August 2006 Texas Monthly article on Charles Whitman (“96 Minutes,” by Pamela Colloff), Shelton Williams is a character in the recounting of the Whitman tragedy. Shelly was there when the shooting started, but it was not his first encounter with the young man who weaken so much havoc on that hot August day in Austin in 1966. While Shelly and Charlie did know each other, they were not friends and they were not adversaries at the University of Texas in the spring and summer of 1966. They were just two guys with troubled families, personal insecurities, and challenged young marriages. Summer of ’66 is not about Charles Whitman and it is not about why the two young men took such different paths. It is memoir about life at UT, about a mystery man, and about a young man and woman who faced a changing and dangerous world in a courageous way. Charles Whitman is simply a character in this true story.

Shelton and Janell Williams survived August 1, 1966, and the summer of ’66. Shelly got a PhD in International Studies, taught at Austin College for thirty-six years and through the organization he founded and of which he is president, The Osgood Center for International Studies, continues to run the Washington Program for Austin College students and students from around the world. Janell graduated from Austin College and worked twenty-five distinguished years for the Social Security Administration. They now live in the Washington, DC area. Each thanks the other for forty-two years of eventful married life, and both look forward to the next “five year review” of their marriage. It comes up in 2009.

A remarkable book. Shelton Williams is a talented author and his personal involvement with the tragedy puts him at center stage to share his tale.

This is a sweet follow up to Dr. Williams first book, Washed in the Blood. It tells the story of his last summer at the University of Texas before going to grad school and his life with his lovely wife, Janell. He was acquainted with Charles Whitman, the sniper in the UT tower who randomly shot at people in the streets of Austin, before being killed by two very brave Austin police officers. It asks the question, “Why do some people facing certain adverse situations become stronger, while others snap?” If you would like a taste of the feel of 1960’s America during its loss of innocence, this is a great place to start.

Washed in the Blood is just remarkable in so many ways, hypnotic, eerie, a spine-tingling murder mystery and also a haunting memoir of what it’s like to grow up in one of strangest and most fascinating places on the face of the earth.  I was hooked by the first page, and Shelton Williams’ writing is honest and beautiful.  One of those rare books that grabs and won’t let go, even after you have read it.

Rum, Cigars, and Corpses
(Roger and Suzanne Mystery Series Book 13)
by Jerold A. Last

Roger and Suzanne have to solve a cold, but still hazardous, case in a hot climate. Roger’s newest client was fired after leading a disastrous tour to Cuba during which a tourist died in a devastating accident. Our detective couple joins a subsequent identical tour of Cuba to seek evidence the catastrophe was murder, not an accident.

There’s no shortage of suspects in this perilous case, including the Cuban Intelligence Services, the CIA, a sprinkling of additional spies waiting for them in Havana, and several suspicious characters traveling on their tour. Danger lurks as they investigate the nightmare scenario that the victim was targeted by a deadly terrorist conspiracy. The author recently visited Cuba on a similar person-to-person tour, so all of the details about locations are authentic and the background is real.

The Body In The Alpaca Pasture
(Roger and Suzanne mystery series Book 11)
by Jerold Last

Someone shot a modern-day gaucho in the back at an isolated alpaca breeding facility in the small town of Molinos, high in the Andes Mountains in Argentina’s northwest province of Salta. In this isolated area far off the beaten track for tourists, everybody at the research facility had an opportunity to shoot the victim without being observed committing the crime.

This isn’t a crime that will be solved by CSI. There aren’t any fingerprints, footprints, a murder weapon, or other traditional clues conveniently left around the cadaver by the killer. The local police (both of them) are glorified meter maids, totally untrained to solve a mysterious murder like this one. By the time Roger and Suzanne arrive the corpse has long since been sent to the nearest hospital for an autopsy, which has been lost by the local bumbling authorities.

What was the motive? Why was the victim targeted? Was it murder for gain?

Roger and Suzanne interrogate the remaining staff members at the alpaca breeding facility as they seek evidence proving the existence of a sinister international conspiracy to explain the reason Oswaldo Pepin died. This fast-paced whodunit mystery features an exotic setting, a complex murder case, and a complicated and suspenseful plot.

Science Can Be Murder
(Roger and Suzanne Mysteries Book 10)
by Jerold Last

Science Can Be Murder combines three books from the Roger and Suzanne South American Mystery series into one omnibus volume. It starts with the first book in the series, the novel The Ambivalent Corpse, an ideal introduction to the series characters. Parts of a dismembered corpse are found on a rocky stretch of beach in Montevideo, Uruguay, apportioned equally between Memorials to a German cruiser sunk in World War II and to the Jews killed in the Holocaust.

Roger and Suzanne travel from Uruguay to Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay to solve this baffling and grotesque murder case. In the novella The Body in the Parking Structure a Bolivian colleague of Suzanne’s is found dead in a parking garage on the UCLA campus. There are possible ties to a small biotechnology company in Los Angeles. The third, and final, novel is The Origin of Murder, set in Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands.

As Roger and Suzanne retrace the path that Charles Darwin sailed and walked more than 175 years ago, the body count increases almost as fast as the clues. The stories are all tied together by Suzanne’s skills and interest in biomedical science (like the author, she’s a biochemist on the faculty of The University of California).

The couple are on a luxury cruise through the Galapagos Islands when Suzanne finds a woman’s body with a couple of bullet holes in it floating in the Pacific Ocean.

There’s a ship full of suspects, including a shady DEA agent and two nubile sisters from San Francisco, with more dead bodies to come. The supporting cast includes their young son Robert, Bruce the nanny, and Paraguayan policeman Eduardo Garcia.

Join our detectives on a visit to the Galapagos Islands as Charles Darwin might have seen them on his historical voyage on HMS Beagle, and visit the ancient Incan city and capital of Ecuador, Quito, high in South America’s Andes Mountains. Series fans and new readers will enjoy this exciting mystery novel, which can be enjoyed as a standalone entry to the series.

Cold Coffee Café Spotlight Interview With Author Jerold A. Last

The author is a scientist on the faculty of the University of California and a big fan of California mystery novels. He taught a popular Freshman Seminar on California Mystery novels for several years at U.C. Davis. A quick search of Amazon will turn up more than just the Roger and Suzanne South American Mystery Series authored by Jerry. You’ll also find several technical books and articles in biochemistry previously edited or authored by him. The novels in his Roger Bowman-Suzanne Foster South American Mystery Series, The Ambivalent Corpse, The Surreal Killer, The Matador Murders, The Deadly Dog Show, The Origin of Murder and Unbearably Deadly are all available as Kindle e-books. So are the shorter novella, The Body in the Bed, and novelette, The Body in the Parking Structure. A novel-length anthology of short stories entitled Five Quickies For Roger And Suzanne and an Omnibus Volume Science Can Be Murder are also available on Amazon. All of the books feature Roger, Suzanne, and various other recurring characters from the series. Reader feedback for all of these books is appreciated, so please take a few minutes to write a book review after you finish reading any of these stories.

Jerry has loved reading mystery novels, especially the P.I. genre based in California, all his life. He started writing mysteries a few years ago when his wife Elaine suggested that he needed to have something to do when he retired – it doesn’t look like he’s retiring in the foreseeable future, but it’s never too soon to begin!

The settings and locales for all of the South American mystery novels, The Ambivalent Corpse, The Surreal Killer, The Matador Murders, and The Origin of Murder are authentic; the author lived previously in Salta, Argentina and Montevideo, Uruguay for several months each, and selected several of the most interesting locations he found for Roger and Suzanne to visit. The Ambivalent Corpse takes place in Montevideo and several of the countries surrounding Uruguay. The Surreal Killer visits Northern Chile’s Atacama Desert and Peru. The Matador Murders revisits Montevideo and also visits Santiago, Chile, where the author has been several times for collaborative research and teaching. The Origin of Murder takes place in the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean 600 miles west of Ecuador, with brief stops in Quito and Mexico’s Sonora Desert. The novelette The Body in the Bed (Montevideo) and two of the Five Quickies, The Empanada Affair (Salta, Argentina) and The Haunted Gymnasium (Fortaleza, Brazil) also feature South American locales.

Jerry and wife Elaine live in Northern California, where Elaine breeds prize-winning German Shorthaired Pointers who have served as the inspiration for The Deadly Dog Show and a future novel entitled Hunter Down (2015) in the series. The author’s blog at http://rogerandsuzannemysteries.blogspot.com describes the background and birth of Jerry’s books, Jerry’s, Elaine’s, and the dog’s lives, and all things mysterious. Please stop by to visit it and take a look.

Interview:

What makes you proud to be a writer from California?  I’m from Northern California, where we’ve lived for more than half my life.  I don’t know if proud is the right word but I enjoy sharing my experiences with my readers, whether they are places I’ve lived and visited, or what I’ve learned from my wife and dogs about German shorthaired pointers.

What or who inspired you to become a writer?  I’ve enjoyed reading what are usually called California mysteries, especially private eye novels, all my life.  I think Perry Mason was my first hero, with Philip Marlowe close behind.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage?  Yes.  I’ve lived and worked in South America, especially Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile, which serve as the backdrop for several of my books.  And, did I mention, my wife Elaine has been breeding and showing German shorthaired pointers for as long as I’ve known her?

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published?  I started writing my first mystery novel about five or six years ago.  I’ve also published about 250 papers in the peer-reviewed scientific literature, as well as editing quite a few books and journals.

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process?  The people I’ve met—real and virtual—fellow writers, readers, Facebook and other social media friends.

What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey?  Probably discovering the world of independent publishing, especially via Amazon Kindle and Createspace.

How many published books do you have?  I currently have eight novels, three novellas, and an anthology of shorter stories, all featuring private eye Roger Bowman and his scientist wife, Suzanne Foster Bowman as the protagonists.

Novels:

Abra Cadaver
Rum, Cigars, and Corpses
Hunter Down
Unbearably Deadly
The Origin of Murder
The Deadly Dog Show
The Matador Murders
The Surreal Killer
The Ambivalent Corpse

Novellas
The Body in the Bed
The Body in the Alpaca Pasture
The Body in the Parking Structure

Anthology:
Five Quickies for Roger and Suzanne

*****There’s also an Omnibus Volume of two of the novels and a novella: Science Can Be Murder.  All of these books are available from Amazon Kindle; the two dog-related novels and the Cuban novel are also published in paperback versions on Createspace.

Do you come up with your title(s) before or after you write the manuscript?  Usually before, but I’ve done it both ways.

Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre?  My preferred genre is Mystery/Thriller/Suspense; often (but not always) International Mystery.  The genre has been my favorite as a reader all my life.

Which book title would you like featured in this interview?  “Rum, Cigars, and Corpses”

What was your inspiration, spark or light bulb moment that inspired you to write the book (one book) that you are seeking promotion for?  Taking a people-to-people tour of Cuba last year.  We toured more than half the island, as well as spending several days seeing Havana.  I saw it as the perfect setting for a murder mystery.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors?  Keep writing.  You learn by doing.

Who is your favorite author and why?  Robert B. Parker or Ross MacDonald.  I have enjoyed reading all their books.  They create worlds I can believe and become immersed in set against localities (Boston, Southern California) I’ve lived in and know well.
